Car Insurance Reform Ads – Are They Real?

Car Insurance Reform and Cheaper Rate Quotes

Every time I visit certain popular websites, I seem to see a red, white and blue advertisement that looks a bit fishy to me. These ads mention President Obama, new federal insurance regulations or reform, and the fact that this means consumers can find cheaper car insurance quotes.

Since I also promote insurance, these catch my attention. I imagine they catch a lot of attention. It is not cheap to advertise on large websites. When I see these running frequently on the main page of a major search engine's portal, I assume they must be turning a profit.

The Obama Ads Must Be Working

I also know these ads must be working for another reason. I looked at the visitor statistics for one of my own websites that had an article about car insurance discounts. On that same page, but not in the article, there was a mention of President Obama and health insurance reform. Somehow the search engine must have read that page and sent me searchers who were looking for this phrase – Obama Car Insurance Reform. Do you see how this works. My page was getting accidental traffic for the subject of the ads even though I never participated in any scheme like that.

But Are These Ads True?

I can not help but believe these ads are a bit misleading though. We have heard a lot about the insurance industry lately. The government took steps to bail out some large insurers. And we can hardly watch the news without hearing about health insurance reform. But these topics are hardly related to some new rules that would make car insurance cheaper.

One might stretch logic though. It is possible that insurance industry bailouts made some major companies financially stable so they did not have to raise rates. It also kept major players in the market so there is still plenty of competition for our premium dollars. But I do not think that is what consumers understand about promotions like this, and I really do not even think that is what the advertisers ever intended.
